Why Word mangles some WordPerfect files
Word can open some WordPerfect documents, but older ones (especially WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.x for DOS, and WordPerfect for Mac) often come out with stray characters or lost formatting, or don't open at all. On a Mac, iPad or Chromebook there is nothing built in to open them.
This page reads the file with libwpd, the WordPerfect reader LibreOffice uses, which understands every version from WordPerfect 4.2 to X9.
What the Word file keeps
The .docx (part of the one-time unlock) keeps the text, fonts, bold, italic and underline, alignment, indents and tab stops, tables, headers and footers, and footnotes as real Word footnotes. Pictures stored as WordPerfect Graphics are drawn and placed in the document.
Prefer a fixed copy? "Save as PDF" is free, keeps the page exactly as it prints, and its text can still be searched and copied.
Legal and office archives
Firms that used WordPerfect for decades often have folders of thousands of documents. With the unlock you can drop a whole folder (or a ZIP) and get back one ZIP with a PDF and a Word file for each, in the same folder layout. Every file is opened on your own computer, which matters for client documents.
